New Lifestyle Academy Opens Its Doors
Newcastle College has recently opened the doors of its brand new £16 million Lifestyle Academy, a training facility for beauty, sport, tourism and hospitality students.
The Lifestyle Academy is a dynamic learning environment and a world class training facility seen nowhere else in the UK.
As well as a ground floor, 65-seat healthy eating Bistro staffed by students with food catered for by students, the new building also boasts dedicated aviation and a cabin crew training room. It also houses a purpose built, biomechanics centre for the study of sports science, the only one of its kind in a further education College. |

Offering the ultimate in relaxation, a spa complete with floatation, steam room, sauna, experiential showers and heated relaxation loungers will complement the well being gym, the Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) status Chefs’ Academy, as well as industry standard training salons, a commercial hairdressing salon and treatment rooms for beauty and holistic therapy.
Designing a Lifestyle Academy
Susan West, Director of the School of Beauty, Sport and Tourism at Newcastle College, said : “The new building marks significant investment for the College and is testament to its continued commitment to creating world class status for the College and its learners."
“Before embarking on the project we consulted many industry experts and are confident we have created a dynamic environment which blends the standards required by industry with vocational courses and that will help us to further build our capacity to nurture and develop the future workforce of the hospitality, travel, sport, health and wellbeing industries.”
Within the Lifestyle Academy the College has placed great importance on the growth areas of nail treatments and technologies. During the planning process the College set out to create training and commercial environments that were fume and dust free without compromising the design.

Choosing Nail Dust and Vapour Extraction Systems
The College researched many organisations for the best extraction system and discussed their needs with the industry. The Purex extraction system was recommended by one of the College’s employer representatives. Purex provided the College with a tailor-made system with a contemporary design yet effective extraction.
Purex stations also offered the opportunity of built-in safe COSHH storage for the chemicals required for the College’s nail technology needs. In total Newcastle College purchased 12 work stations complete with table extraction and overhead extraction through lamp fitting.
The College also required a bespoke extraction product that could be built into the nail bar area in the commercial hair and beauty salon on the top floor of the £16 million building. After negotiations with Purex the College has achieved a stylish nail bar where clients can receive manicure, nail art or nail technology whilst looking out to outstanding views of Newcastle.
Sandra Wilkinson, Section Leader for Beauty at Newcastle College, said: “We are delighted with the facilities in the Lifestyle Academy. The nail facilities are outstanding and all of our needs have been fulfilled with the Purex equipment that we have installed.”
