Nail polish and nail polish removers are essentially mixtures of toxic chemicals. Many of the solvents and substances used in nail varnishes such as toluene, acetone, formaldehyde, and especially phthalates, if present, are reproductive toxicants and hazardous and have been found to cause health problems in workers, including occupational asthma.

Podiatrists and other health care workers are exposed to fine particles of dust created when filing or drilling down finger or toenails. One study demonstrated the risk to the eyes of podiatrists (Ledee et al 1996). Recent research by Miller (2000) suggested that within Podiatry there was 4 times the national prevalence of asthma, which gave cause for concern. In the same study, podiatrists reported problems with rhinitis and conjunctivitis regularly, suggesting occupational health risks and problems.
